MoreLIP: Welcome, September. Out of the August Doldrums and into New Opportunities

September, glad to see ya! Hopefully, you’ll be a bit more august than August.

Things were pretty slow the past month. Hunting for stories of interest for readers of LCW was a bit like searching for diamonds in Arkansas; some turned up from time to time and often, when that happened, became a feature story akin to finding another 4-carat rock near Murfreesboro.

Factors including fewer business-page reporters and declining investments from reticent VCs and angels contributed to August's scarcity of stories dealing with venturing, entrepreneurship, commercialization and even legislation. We could have taken the month off and not missed a thing.

But there’s an uptick in the air. The sails are beginning to flutter as the stock market recovers.

And the gavel is about to fall on several new themes. Not only are we kicking off a new football season, but decisions will soon be made on the healthcare system, to be followed in short order by actions on renewable energies and global climate issues, both of which have the potential to impact the business community.

The scholars are back at their books and research labs, catalyzing a fresh round of commercialization, tech transfer opportunities and even, as Reuters reports, an upturn in IPOs.

So we predict that exciting times are on the horizon. And even as relatively quiet as was August on the venturing front, we still found sufficient material to make today's edition worth your time.
