College Students Struggling with Soaring Tuition while Congress Fiddles over Loan Rates

Thousands of Michigan college students are getting punched in the wallet by a combination of tuition hikes averaging 3.45% and a doubling of interest rates on some of their loans that will go into effect Monday. In the short run, they’ll be paying more on their annual tuition bills, with the highest increase at 8.9% announced last week at Wayne State University.

State Pensions Face Larger-than-usual Funding Gap Reports Moody’s

State pensions face a much larger funding gap than their financial reports typically reveal, according to a new calculation released Thursday by the credit rating firm Moody’s Investors Service. Moody’s said its calculation shows that states had just 48 cents of each dollar promised to current and future retirees in 2011. Currently, states report that they have 74 cents of each dollar owed to retirees.

Obama’s Ambitious Plan to Cut Greenhouse Gases

President Obama, declaring that “Americans across the country are already paying the price of inaction,” announced sweeping measures on Tuesday to reduce greenhouse gas pollution and prepare the nation for a future of rising temperatures. The carbon cuts at power plants are the centerpiece of a three-pronged climate-change plan that will also involve new federal funds to advance renewable energy technology, as well as spending to fortify cities and states against the ravages of storms and droughts aggravated by a changing climate.
