‘Crowdfunding’ Trend Poised to Make Mark on U.S. Investing Landscape

Gathering small sums of money from a large number of people online — known as “crowdfunding” — is poised to take off in the investing world, with backing from Washington policymakers who see it as a chance to involve the masses in an arena dominated by big Wall Street firms and the super-wealthy. But given its potential to upend the nation’s investment landscape, critics are worried that crowdfunding will leave unsophisticated investors vulnerable to fraud or big losses. Wisconsin Looks to Reverse a History of Poor Venture Capital Investments

Madison lawmakers proposed a new venture capital plan last week, the latest step in their two-year slog to help create an entrepreneurial renaissance. Meanwhile, groups of entrepreneurs, mostly concentrated in Madison and Milwaukee, continue their attempts to spark that renaissance from the ground up. And they're using a new "lean start-up" method that's a departure from the traditional formula used by young companies. Both efforts are working under the shadow of a dismal record for the state.

Texas Legislation Would Remove Politicians from Tech Fund Decisions

Legislation is advancing in the Texas House that would remove Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and House Speaker Joe Straus from making the final decision in awarding millions to technology startups. The fund, created in 2005, has awarded $194 million to 137 companies and an additional $175 million to help universities recruit top-level researchers or attract federal research dollars. Davis said that no other state has its political leadership making the final awards to the private sector.

H-1B Visa Program Fills in Five Days

While a sign of an improving economy to some, the renewed popularity of a controversial visa program for high-skilled foreign workers could leave some employers with crucial positions unfilled. U.S. Immigration which administers the H-1B visa program, closed the application process after taking applications for only five days, the first time since 2008 that the program’s cap was reached within one week.
