The angel investors didn’t seem so naïve or incompetent. While not professional investors, most angels are very successful in their own right.

VC Downdraft Confirmed: Q3 Reports Dollars And Deal Volume Both Down

Venture capitalists invested $6.5 billion in 890 deals in the third quarter of 2012, according to the MoneyTree Report. For the quarter, investments were down 11 percent in terms of dollars and five percent in the number of deals compared to the second quarter of 2012 when $7.3 billion was invested in 935 deals. Investment for the first three quarters of the year was $20 billion into 2,661 deals.

Drillers punch so many holes and extract so much gas through hydraulic fracturing that they have driven the price of natural gas to near-record lows. And because of the intricate financial deals and leasing arrangements that many of them struck during the boom, they were unable to pull their foot off the accelerator fast enough to avoid a crash in the price of natural gas, which is down more than 60 percent.
