New York Vying to Become Global High-Tech Hub

Just as a trench dug in the 1800s created a shortcut to the nation’s interior and helped make New York a global trading hub, the city is now hoping for another “Erie Canal moment” with a high-tech research complex to be built on an island in the East River. The idea is to create an applied-sciences university where engineers are also trained as entrepreneurs from day one.

Silicon Valley and the New Geography of Jobs

In his new book on growing inequality in America, U.C. Berkeley economist Enrico Moretti says that Silicon Valley has an outsized influence on employment growth and that it has created more jobs than it has destroyed. The Internet sector has been growing 200 times faster than the rest of the labor market writes Moretti in “The New Geography of Jobs”, and, it is “our best hope for creating more jobs in the future.”

California Cuts Threaten the Status of Universities

Class sizes have increased, courses have been cut and tuition has been raised — repeatedly. Fewer colleges are offering summer classes. Administrators rely increasingly on higher tuition from out-of-staters. And there are signs it could get worse: If a tax increase proposed by Gov. Jerry Brown is not approved this year, officials say they will be forced to consider draconian cuts like eliminating entire schools or programs.

Facebook’s Follies Make Weak IPO Market Weaker

After Facebook flopped in its market debut, investors are not liking new stock offerings. Facebook, by failing to instill confidence among investors and executives, has made a weak market weaker. No offerings have priced since it’s debut May 18." The current market is on hold," said James Krapfel. Facebook’s shares have fallen nearly 26 percent since its debut, and that, he added, has "really put a damper on investors’ enthusiasm for IPOs."
