Venture Financing Forecast for 2013: Partly Cloudy With Lower Chance of Success

Concerns that Series A rounds will be hard to come by in 2013 are widespread in the venture business, according to a survey. Forty-five percent of venture capitalists think this will be the most difficult financing to obtain, according to a survey of venture capitalists and startup chief executives by Dow Jones VentureSource and the National Venture Capital Association. That reflects an ongoing debate in the industry about whether seed-stage investors have financed too many consumer Internet startups that will now have trouble tapping the venture capital they need to grow.

The Billion-Dollar Question About Tony Hsieh's Las Vegas Experiment

Tony Hsieh is investing $350 million of his own money to transform downtown Las Vegas. He's been successful so far, but the billion-dollar question remains: Can the community survive without Tony? Earlier this year, Zappos signed an $18 million deal to move its corporate headquarters and 1,500 employees from Henderson into Vegas' City Hall. Hsieh's goal is to make Vegas the most “community-minded,” smartest city in the world. He also wants to make it a tech hub.

Pennsylvania Second to Texas in Shale Jobs

Pennsylvania is second only to Texas in the number of workers employed by the unconventional oil and gas industry, according to a new report by IHS Global Insight. The Keystone state had nearly 103,000 people employed in jobs linked to oil and gas extraction, much of which has grown thanks to the development of the state's Marcellus Shale formation.
